Worship Blog ~ Ocotber 23rd

Service began with Music to Gather Us by Rae Stewart who also offered the Ministry of Music, “Through These Doors”, a song he composed telling of lives and events that have pass through a church’s doors over the years.  The inspiration for this song came to Rae while walking throughSherbrookeVillageseeing the open doors of a church.  Margaret Anne Dodson shared a Mission Moment.  Sharing the service with Rev. Moriarity was Rev. Lee Simpson, Director of Operations for the United Church Observer.  Rev. Simpson shared the Epistle Lesson, Gospel Reading and Reflections, “Who Am I” reminding us that our faith does not fit neatly on a matchbook cover. We are a church in transition, as all churches, searching souls to find the new way.   During a Moment for All Rev. Moriarity spoke to the children about rules at home, school and church.  She shared three rules with the children that Jesus would want us to follow: love your God, love your neighbour and love yourself.  Hymns sung were Where Two or Three Are Gathered; Though I May Speak; Deep in Our Hearts.  Greeting the congregation: Barb MacLaren and Donna Bowes.  Steward: Bill Dodson.  Lay leaders: Margaret Anne Dodson and Thea Waller.

Food For Thought…

Money alone will not sustain churches

as found in the “letters to the Editor”  Pictou Advocate~  October 19, 2011

To the Editor,
We were very pleased to read Ralph Ferguson’s letter to the editor (“Are you doing all you can to help your community?”, Oct. 5), and certainly appreciate the questions and challenges which Ralph raises. Ralph’s letter was also very timely as on October 12, ministerial leadership and lay leadership from each of the five town churches gathered together.
Our evening began with a presentation from Scott Conrod (CAO Town of Pictou), who outlined some of the challenges and opportunities facing our town. Then, each of the churches gave a brief outline of their ministry and again the challenges and opportunities being faced. The majority of time, however, was spent in conversation with each other as we talked about how we might support each other and work closer together as we seek to make a difference in our community.
This evening was a beginning. More conversations will happen. More conversations need to happen within all of our churches and, more importantly, beyond our church walls with the wider Pictou community.
We believe that each of our churches has made, and continues to make, vital contributions to the life and well-being of our town. Working more closely together will only enhance that.
As Ralph states in his letter; all of our town churches need the support of the wider community. Yes, financial support is important: ministry costs. Yet, financial support alone will not sustain the ministries of our churches. We need the personal commitment of people of all ages to faithfully and prayerfully work together so that we all might be part of making a difference in our community and in our world. We need people of good-will, whatever the faith tradition may or may not be, working together to build a community where compassion, peace, justice and love flourish.
In the words of Margaret Mead; “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Rev. Peter Armstrong (St. James Anglican Church); Rev. Gerald Campbell (Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church); Rev. Iona MacLean (First Presbyterian Church); Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity (Pictou United Church); Rev. Steven Webb (St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church)

Worship Blog ~ Sunday, October 16th

The UCW marked World Food Day.  Lay Leaders: Donna Weaver & Allanah Ives, Gwen MacDonald, June Cameron, Sharon Cheverie, Anne Ferguson, Ruth Mackay and Bonny McTague.  Receiving the offering: Lynne Logan, Doris MacMillan, June Brown and Cathy Davis.   During the Moment for All Rev. Moriarity presented the children with a bowl of salt and asked what salt is used for and what does it mean when someone says, “You are the salt of the Earth”.  She told the children that this means you make a difference, no matter how small referring to just a pinch of salt. We paused to think and watch the power point presentation “Make Hunger History”; some startling statistics such as 13 billion dollars would feed the people of the world which is less than is spent on pet food in one year.  Reflections read by Ruth Mackay “What Can We Do” gave us suggestions as to what we can do to ease world hunger and make the world a better place. Ministry of Music by the choir featured “From Now On” which was composed by Emma Lee Stewart.  October 23 is Observer Sunday with Rev. Lee Simpson as our guest.  Refreshments to follow.
